This is Style Study №01 of Megan Pelto - an amazing illustrator from the US.

She was inspired to create this illustration when she was going on a chilly sunset hike in the mountains surrounding Portland, Oregon. 🌲

A style study is a personal project where I:

- dissect illustrations that I like & have a deeper look at the details

- recreate them from scratch to the best of my ability

- bring them even more to life with animation

As an animator you often get a still image that you have to re-create and break down for animation, so doing these style studies helps me learn a lot and see new possibilities for future projects.

Doing these studies has completely changed my animation workflow - it’s all done in After Effects with shape layers and effects for the different textures and grain.

The effects used are a mix of roughen edges, gaussian blur & turbulent displace.

I actually had to recreate all the individual "dots" in the hat texture one by one. I could've used a texture brush to roughly recreate them, but I wanted to keep it as close to the original as possible. After all, there is only 366 of them...
